SUPERIOR, Ariz. (AP) — Outside of an aging mining town in the mountains east of Phoenix, a copper company has burrowed a shaft 1.3 miles into the high desert landscape in what is believed to be the deepest such mine in the U.S.
The final number of Britons confirmed killed by an Islamist gunman in Tunisia a week ago is 30 and all victims have been identified, British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said on Thursday. "We now have all 30 British victims positively identified and we can say with a high degree of confidence that is the final death toll," Hammond told reporters on arrival in the Austrian capital for nuclear talks between Iran and major powers. The death toll has risen several times, from 22 to 27, and again then to 29 on Wednesday.
A ferry carrying 189 passengers and crew capsized off the central Philippines in heavy waves on Thursday, killing at least 36 people but the majority of those on board were rescued, the coast guard and police said. The MBCA Kim-Nirvana, a motorised outrigger with 173 passengers and 16 crew on board, capsized suddenly minutes after leaving the port of Ormoc. Coast guard spokesman Armand Balilo said 127 people survived, but could not immediately give details of their rescue, while 26 were still listed as missing.
