Pope Francis kneels to wash the foot of a man at the Don Gnocchi Foundation Center in Rome, Thursday, April 17, 2014. The Pontiff has washed the feet of 12 elderly and disabled people — women and non-Catholics among them — in a pre-Easter ritual designed to show his willingness to serve like a "slave." Francis' decision in 2013 to perform the Holy Thursday ritual on women and Muslim inmates at a juvenile detention center just two weeks after his election helped define his rule-breaking papacy. It riled traditionalist Catholics, who pointed to the Vatican's own regulations that the ritual be performed only on men since Jesus' 12 apostles were men. The 2014 edition brought Francis to a center for the elderly and disabled Thursday. Francis kneeled down, washed, dried and kissed the feet of a dozen people, some in wheelchairs. He said the ritual is a gesture of "a slave's service." Actress Whoopi Goldberg arrives on the red carpet for the 86th Academy Awards on March 2, 2014 in Hollywood, CaliforniaOscar-winning actress, comedienne and talk-show host Whoopi Goldberg sang the praises of marijuana inhaled through a pocket vaporizer on Thursday as she made her debut as an online pot columnist. In fact, her name is Sippy." wrote Goldberg, 58, about her pocket vaporizer on "The Cannabist," a pot-friendly website run by the Denver Post newspaper in Colorado. The Rocky Mountain state was the second in the United States, after Washington in the Pacific Northwest, to legalize marijuana for recreational use. But in a country where, at the federal level, marijuana is classified as an illegal drug on a par with heroin, Goldberg said Sippy's compact proportions helps maintain discretion.

Ukraine Foreign Minister Andrii Deshchytsia speaks during a press conference in Geneva, on April 17, 201418:01 GMT - Pro-referendum rally - Over in Donetsk, some 2,000 people are demonstrating for a united Ukraine in a region where pro-Russian activists have seized public buildings and weapons depots. AFP photographer Anatolii Stepanov says the protesters did not encounter any resistance from the building's security personnel, and told reporters that their sole demand was for the heavily Russified region to stage a referendum on turning Ukraine into a federation with broader local rights Standing before the world's media, Deshchytsia warns the deal must be implemented within 'days' after crisis talks in Geneva. The deal is in sharp contrast to an earlier thinly-veiled warning from Russian leader Vladimir Putin, who left the door open for military intervention in Ukraine.
