From Sydney to London, from Amsterdam to Rio, an estimated 570,000 took to the streets in 2,300 separate events across 175 countries at the weekend, co-organiser and campaign group Avaaz said. Some 50,000 demonstrators gathered in London's Hyde Park alone, many donning animal costumes to resemble bumblebees, cows, polar bears and exotic fish, while others brandished placards bearing stark warnings.

In fact, only a botched finish to Friday's giant slalom prevented the 20-year-old American from a treble sweep at Aspen. Two days after faltering three gates from victory and a day after winning the opening World Cup slalom race of the season, Shiffrin won again in a combined two-run time of 1min 40.18secs.
