A flock of birds fly as smoke billows from the Fort McMurray wildfires in KinosisBy Rod Nickel and Liz Hampton WANDERING RIVER, Alberta (Reuters) - A convoy of evacuees from the Canadian oil hub of Fort McMurray made its way on Friday through the heart of an out-of-control wildfire on the only highway out of the region, passing through the burned ruins of the city. High winds and parched timber and brush from a spring heat wave stoked flames, which have engulfed 247,000 acres (101,000 hectares) in Canada's energy heartland since erupting on Sunday. Some 88,000 people were forced to flee Fort McMurray and two oil sands sites south of the city were threatened.

Can Dundar, editor-in-chief of leading opposition daily Cumhuriyet, was sentenced to five years and 10 months at the closed-door trial, while his Ankara bureau chief Erdem Gul was handed five years in prison, television stations said. The sentencing came hours after Dundar escaped an apparent attempt on his life by a gunman outside the courthouse.
