Myanmar on Thursday freed 155 Chinese nationals, who were last week given long jail terms for illegal logging, as a "goodwill" gesture, authorities said, following intense lobbying from China. The announcement comes after the sentences sharply raised tensions between the once closely-bonded neighbours whose ties have cooled since Myanmar began emerging from decades of military rule in 2011. The release included all of the 155 Chinese nationals handed jail sentences for illegal logging in northern Myanmar near their shared border, Beijing’s foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in a statement.
India executed convicted bomb plotter Yakub Memon on Thursday for conspiring in the nation's deadliest attack, a series of blasts that killed hundreds in Mumbai more than two decades ago. Memon was hanged at Nagpur jail in the western state of Maharashtra on his 53rd birthday after India's president and Supreme Court rejected 11th-hour appeals for clemency. Yakub Memon was hanged today at 7:00 am (0130 GMT)," Nagpur police sub-inspector R.V Halami told AFP.
