China opposed additional sanctions against Russia on Monday over accusations Moscow was sending troops into Ukrainian territory, saying the European Union's push to draw up more measures would only complicate the crisis. The European Union on Sunday threatened Russia with new trade sanctions, but sharp divisions among leaders at a summit in Brussels left the timing of any measures uncertain. "A political solution is the only way out, sanctions do not help to solve the underlying problems in Ukraine," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said at a daily news briefing. "It may lead to new and more complicating factors." China has adopted a cautious response to the crisis, not wanting either to alienate key ally Russia or comment directly on the referendum in which Crimea voted overwhelmingly to join Russia, lest it set a precedent for its own restive regions, like Tibet.

Pakistani supporters of Canadian cleric Tahir ul Qadri sit on the lawn at the Parliament premises following clashes with police in Islamabad on August 31, 2014Hundreds of protesters trying to topple Pakistan's government briefly seized the state broadcaster on Monday, intensifying the political crisis gripping the nuclear-armed nation. Transmissions of the main Pakistani Television (PTV) were cut after protesters armed with clubs stormed the building in Islamabad's high-security "red zone", before being removed by security forces after around half an hour. The dramatic occupation came after fresh street clashes between riot police and followers of opposition politician Imran Khan and populist cleric Tahir-ul-Qadri, in which officers were pelted with rocks and responded with teargas.

Pro-Russian separatists stand in front of destroyed trains at a railway station in the eastern Ukrainian town of IlovayskBy Richard Balmforth and Pavel Polityuk KIEV (Reuters) - Ukraine's military said on Monday its forces were battling a Russian tank battalion for control of a vital airport in the east of the country as President Petro Poroshenko accused Moscow of "direct and open aggression" against his country. Ukrainian coastguards meanwhile searched for two seamen missing after one of their patrol boats was sunk in the Sea of Azov by artillery fire from pro-Russian separatists on the shore. Several hundred Ukrainian forces are bogged down near Ilovaysk, east of the region's main city of Donetsk, and have been trying to break out of encirclement by Russian-backed separatists for several days. Poroshenko, speaking at a military academy in Kiev, said Russia's direct involvement in the war against the separatists in eastern Ukraine had tipped the balance on the battlefield and was the main reason for recent reversals.
