(AP) — People in cars and trucks rolled into the wildfire-ravaged city of Gatlinburg on Friday to get a first look at what remained of their homes and businesses, and a mayor raised the death toll to 13, including a woman who died of a heart attack during the firestorm.

Rebels put up fierce resistance in the southeastern outskirts of the battered city, but government forces closed in on opposition territory from the east. President Bashar al-Assad's forces have made swift gains since their offensive against Aleppo -- once Syria's commercial powerhouse -- began on November 15.
