This image made from amateur video posted on an activist social media account early Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2014, which has been verified and is consistent with other AP reporting, shows an explosion in the village of Kfar Derian, Syria. The Syrian foreign ministry said Tuesday that Washington informed Damascus’ envoy to the United Nations before launching airstrikes against the Islamic State group in Syria, attacks that activists said inflicted casualties among jihadi fighters on the ground. Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an activist group, said missiles also targeted the village of Kfar Derian, which is a base for the al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front, which is a rival of the Islamic State group. Abdurrahman said those strikes appear to have been carried by the U.S. (AP Photo/amateur video via AP video)WASHINGTON (AP) — Combined U.S.-Arab airstrikes at the heart of the Islamic State group's military strongholds in Syria achieved their strategic aim of showing the extremists that their savage attacks will not go unanswered, the top American military officer said Tuesday.

GENEVA (Reuters) - The United Nations refugee agency said on Tuesday it was making contingency plans for all 400,000 inhabitants of the Syrian Kurdish town of Kobani to flee into Turkey to escape advancing Islamic State militants. Some 138,000 Syrian Kurdish refugees have entered Turkey in an exodus that began last week, and two border crossing points remain open, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees said. "We are preparing for the whole population fleeing into Turkey. The population of Kobani is 400,000," UNHCR chief spokeswoman Melissa Fleming told a news briefing in Geneva. ...
