Two commuter trains crashed head-on in southern Germany on Tuesday, killing at least eight people and injuring more than 100, in one of the country's deadliest rail accidents in years. Several carriages were derailed, with blue, yellow and silver metal debris left strewn around the crash site next to a river in the southern state of Bavaria. "We have eight dead on the trains," said police spokesman Juergen Thaimeier.
Former Ireland and British and Irish Lions captain Paul O'Connell has been forced to retire with immediate effect due to injury, he announced on Tuesday. "It is with deep regret that I have decided to retire from professional rugby following medical advice," O'Connell, 36, said in a statement published on the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) website. O'Connell, who won 108 caps for Ireland at lock and seven caps for the Lions, retired from international rugby late last year after a hamstring injury forced him out of the World Cup.
