A customer cradles her drink in Starbucks' Mayfair Vigo Street branch in central LondonBy Martinne Geller LONDON (Reuters) - Britain moved forward with its planned sugar tax on Monday, publishing draft legislation confirming a two-band levy for sugar-added soft drinks aimed at fighting obesity. In opting for a sugar tax, Britain joins Belgium, France, Hungary and Mexico, all of which have imposed some form of tax on drinks with added sugar. Britain's tax, announced in March, is due to come into force in April 2018, giving sellers of soft drinks, such as Coca-Cola European Partners and Britvic , time to reduce sugar in their products.

Camping gear hangs out to dry at Oceti Sakowin camp on the edge of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation on December 5, 2016 outside Cannon Ball, North DakotaNative Americans and their supporters expressed cautious optimism Monday after the US Army nixed plans for a controversial oil pipeline crossing in North Dakota, with many fearing their victory could be short lived. "There are still some remaining questions," said Dallas Goldtooth, one of the leaders of the protest camp in the North Dakota plains, where thousands have camped to block the planned route of the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Protesters hold up placards outside the Supreme Court in Parliament Square, central LondonBy Michael Holden and Estelle Shirbon LONDON (Reuters) - The British government launched a Supreme Court battle on Monday over who has the power to trigger the formal process of leaving the European Union, seeking to overturn a legal ruling that could derail its Brexit strategy. With passions inflamed by the June vote to leave the EU, demonstrators gathered outside the court as it began hearing the government's appeal against a ruling that ministers needed parliament's assent before triggering the complex process. The High Court ruled last month that Prime Minister Theresa May could not trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty and begin two years of Brexit talks with the 27 remaining EU members without parliamentary backing.
