A protester carries an empty oil container on his head during a peaceful demonstration against a hike in fuel prices in Ghana's capital AccraGhana partially removed fuel subsidies on Sunday, just three months after reintroducing them, to cut spending and restore macro stability. Ghana's government reintroduced fuel subsidies in April, without announcing the action, and the head of the Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors told Reuters in June it had spent around $85 million since then in extra payments. The end of the subsidies, which will take effect on Monday, will cause premium petrol to rise 23 percent per litre to 3.36 cedis (US$1.02). The price of aviation turbine fuel will, however, go down 1.9 percent to 1.03 cedis.

Pakistani schoolgirl activist Malala Yousafzai speaks during a meeting with the leaders of the #BringBackOurGirls Abuja campaign group, in AbujaBy Tim Cocks and Abraham Terngu ABUJA (Reuters) - Pakistani rights activist Malala Yousafzai, who survived being shot in the head by the Taliban for campaigning for girls' education, pledged while on a trip to Nigeria to help free a group of schoolgirls abducted by Islamist militants. On Sunday, Malala met parents of the more than 200 girls who were kidnapped by the militant group Boko Haram from a school in the northeastern village of Chibok in April. Boko Haram, inspired by the Taliban, say they are fighting to establish an Islamic state in religiously mixed Nigeria. "I can see those girls as my sisters ... and I'm going to speak up for them until they are released," said Malala, who was due to meet President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday, her 17th birthday.
