A US appeals court dealt another blow to President Barack Obama's efforts to grant amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants. The US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in New Orleans rejected a request from the Obama administration that it lift an injunction barring it from carrying out a measure that would have protected some four million undocumented foreigners from deportation. Obama had used an executive order in November to drive through the measure, but in February, just before it was due to go into effect, a Texas judge issued an emergency injunction until a trial on its legality could be held.
Gunfire and explosions rang out Wednesday in a diplomatic district of Kabul as security forces battled militants who tried to storm a guesthouse owned by a prominent political family, police said, in the latest attack in the Afghan capital. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, which comes as the Taliban intensify their annual spring offensive despite Kabul's repeated overtures to reopen peace talks. Sporadic blasts could still be heard hours after the assault began late Tuesday in the upmarket neighbourhood of Wazir Akbar Khan, home to foreign embassies and diplomatic enclaves which are a prime target for attacks.
