With the win, the Red Storm (10-6-1, 6-1-1 Big East) has set up a winner-take-all scenario for its final regular-season game at DePaul.
The Blue Demons lead the conference with 20 points in the standings, while St. John’s has 19, meaning that a win for either team would result in a regular-season title.
Seton Hall remains winless in the Big East following the loss, falling to 3-9-5 with an 0-5-3 mark in conference play.
The St. John’s defense proved spectacular once again, registering its eighth shutout of the season and its fifth in Big East play. Sophomore goalkeeper Diana Poulin, the conference leader in clean sheets, turned away one Seton Hall shot in the winning effort.
Despite not getting on the board, the Red Storm dominated the first half of play, outshooting the Pirates 8-2 in the opening period. Three of the St. John’s tries were on target.
The Red Storm finally broke the stalemate 14 minutes into the second half, as Rachel Daly netted her eighth tally of the year to give her team the lead.
After going down in the 18th minute and missing a majority of the first half, Daly swiped the ball from a Seton Hall defender just inside the top-right edge of the box.
She then placed a masterful right foot on the ball, sending it to the top-left corner of the goal and burying it just inside the post, an impossible spot for the goalkeeper.
St. John’s controlled the ball in its offensive zone for a majority of the contest, outshooting the Pirates 16-5 for the game.
St. John’s travels to The Windy City to face DePaul on Friday. First kick for that match is slated for 4 p.m. ET.
