The recent decision by the state and city teacher unions to agree to a new statewide teacher evaluation system certainly is not all that clear. How can anyone really evaluate a teacher's performance in the classroom using the standardized tests as such?
To make that part of a teacher's evaluation at 40 percent is totally ridiculous and unfair. Teachers have to deal with students of differing capabilities each day, not to mention a whole myriad of other elements in the daily classroom schedule. There is so much more than standardized testing that needs to be looked at when evaluating teachers. If students do not score well on those tests, is it fair to assume that it is the fault of the classroom teacher?
All school districts throughout the state need to carefully analyze this new evaluation system before it is implemented.
Also, the New York City teachers have been working under their expired contract for nearly three years. Why have they not received a new and fair contract? Why haven't the city and the UFT been able to complete this very critical task? They need to work at getting this finished.
How many teachers are going to retire or just leave the system this June? There will probably be many, and who could blame them for leaving?
