We ran this photo from our archives last week with the caveat that it might be a little tougher for you political sleuths out there – we got a lot of flack from our way-too-easy photo from one of Governor Mario Cuomo’s State of the State addresses! - to help us identify the people and even the event where the photo was taken.

We received one response from Jeff Gottlieb, president of the Central Queens Historical Association. He wrote to let us know that the person second from the left was Peter Magnani, Queen Borough President Claire Shulman’s deputy borough president, who would later move on to take the post of director of Capital and Facilities Management with the Queens Public Library.

Gottleib was also able to identify the public official standing fourth from the left as former City Counil member Joseph F. Lisa. Lisa represented Jackson Heights, Elmhurst and Corona in the City Council in the 80s.

In 1991, when the City Council expanded from 35 to 51 members under a new City Charter, Lisa,a former assemblyman, opted to run for a judgeship. He would later go on to serve as a Civil and New York State Supreme Court justice.

He would be replaced by John Sabini, who would later go on to serve in the State Senate.

Gottlieb also hypothesized that the woman in the background putting on a white hardhat is none other than Claire Shulman herself.
