The trouble with job fairs

The only people who benefit from job fairs are those who host them. They get the brownie points or revenue that's generated from admission fees.

How do you put together a job fair without consulting the unemployed; allowing their input in the planning of the event? Find out what their concerns or needs are. It is difficult enough being unemployed. Why not employ the unemployed to serve as staff at the event? Then later they can still approach potential employers at the job fair concerning vacancies.

Even more disheartening is to present resumes only to have them refused by potential employers. They request that you apply on- line as you stand there with twenty to thirty resumes in hand. And in fact the fairs require a resume for entry into the event.

The hosting agency or company misrepresents themselves (exaggerates). Many employers are no shows or are unequipped to adequately interview the unemployed. They make half hearted attempts to perform.

I don't know a soul who actually got a job from any of those fairs.

The unemployed need immediate jobs; not internships, summer jobs, more training or civil service exam dates. There should be giveaways that would aid in the job search or in some other way help. The unemployed will consider lesser paying jobs while potential employers are uncompromising regarding the qualifications.

No wonder the unemployed just stop looking for jobs all together!
