This letter is being sent on behalf of the Maspeth United Methodist Church Family. As you know last year our beloved church tragically burned down. We were hoping to rebuild it.
The Maspeth community was very supportive and we received many donations to help us in this endeavor. Almost a year later we realized that it was not practical to rebuild because the congregation was too small to support a new church.
We decided to merge with the Glendale United Methodist Church.
We want to express our gratitude for all the support from the Maspeth community. We were a presence in Maspeth for 155 years and the church served our congregation as well as the community for all those years. Thus, when we needed help, the community was there for us.
We felt strongly that we should return every donation we received for rebuilding if we were able to identify the donor. We returned most, but we received some cash donations at the Maspeth Street Fair in 2009 that we were unable to return.
Therefore we decided to make a donation with the balance to the Girl Scouts of South West Queens and the Maspeth Self Help Senior Center. We had a long history with both of these organizations who had met in our church.
We also wanted the money to be returned to people from the Maspeth community because they reached out to us in such a wonderful way in a very difficult and sad time for us.
We have settled very nicely into the newly merged Glendale Maspeth United Methodist Church and we cordially invite anyone who would like to come to see us there.
We are very thankful for the caring and generosity that we received from the people of Maspeth
and we wish them all the very best.
The Maspeth United Methodist Church Family
