Dear Editor:

Elected officials across New York State - and the country – are declaring April 14 as Equal Pay Day, the day in 2015 when the wages paid to American women catch up to the wages paid to men from the previous year.

Over a lifetime of work (47 years) for college-educated women, the total estimated loss of their earnings compared with men is $1.2 million. And six in ten mothers are their household's primary or co-breadwinners, making pay equity critical for family economic security.

Congress, the New York State Legislature, and city and county governments have acknowledged that gender wage inequity is a real problem.

The American Association of University Women (AAUW), PowHerNY Equal Pay Campaign, Brooklyn Queens NOW, and Women’s Equality Coalition support the Equal Pay Bill in the state legislature, containing equal pay provisions that prevent discrimination and prohibit retaliation against workers who inquire about their salaries.

Please urge your state legislators to pass the NY Equal Pay Bill; and local mayors and county executives to review their equal pay practices – particularly with government contractors.

It’s time to close the wage gap once and for all!
