D’Angelo Harrison recorded a double-double and five players scored in double-figures as the St. John’s men’s basketball team cruised to a 97-71 exhibition victory against St. Thomas Aquinas at Carnesecca Arena on Saturday.

Harrison finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Phil Greene IV drained four three-pointers as part of a game-high 21-point effort. The duo went a combined 7-of-7 from long range as part of a 30-8 second half run that saw the Red Storm open a 28-point lead.

Rysheed Jordan added 17 points and six steals as part of a defensive effort that forced 20 Spartan turnovers. Sir’Dominic Pointer contributed 13 points, six rebounds and five blocks, and Adonis De La Rosa finished with 10 points and five rebounds.

“We struggled early, but I thought the smaller group of four seniors and Rysheed [Jordan] made a nice run with the defensive pressure applied and pace that we are able to play at,” said head coach Steve Lavin.

St. John’s led by six at the break before draining its first seven three-point attempts of the second half to take control of the game. A 3-pointer from Myles Stewart and a Jordan layup completed a six-point spurt as the Red Storm opened up its largest lead of the game, a 29-point cushion, 87-58, at the 7:13 mark.

“Those seniors, along with Rysheed, had a good rhythm going in the second half and caught fire to let us pull away with the victory,” said Lavin.

Stewart finished with three points and one rebound and Jay Henderson added five points, two rebounds and one assist.

St. John’s opens the regular season on November 14 with a 7 p.m. game against NJIT at Carnesecca Arena. The game will air on the YES Network.
