Meanwhile, the St. John’s Prep volleyball team went on to beat Bishop Loughlin, 25-14, 23-25, 30-28, 25-19, in the CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Division II championship game Thursday night in Astoria.
The title is school’s first in volleyball in 23 years. Senior Matria Barbarino said that at every practice she would see the 1988 banner and it would fuel her throughout the season.
Coach Jennifer Cocchi, who has coached the team for the past 14 years, will guide St. John’s into the CHSAA Class A state tournament next week at Cardinal Spellman for the second straight year.
And the junior varsity volleyball team defeated Bishop Ford in straight sets by scores of 25-7 and 25-2 to finish a perfect 11-0 on the season.
