In my article last week, I noted the weather has been really unpredictable. That proved to be an understatement, for on Wednesday we started to get warnings of a winter nor'easter on its way to New York.
The warnings were right on target, for this storm was one of the biggest in years. The storm, named Nemo, brought Woodhaven nearly nine inches of snow with strong winds and cold chilly temperatures. Our Sanitation Department did a great job again as they had done and are still doing with the Sandy recovery. They proved once again that they are N.Y.’s Strongest.
We dug out, and now with warmer weather the snow is slowly disappearing. During this strong, snowy cold spell Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue was “Taking Care of BIDness.” Many supermarkets, stores and even some of our banks were open. At least, you could buy food and cash a check.
But in spite of this very strong snowstorm, please think positively, because Daylight Savings Time is only 26 days away and it's only 36 days until spring and this storm will be a memory to us here in Woodhaven.
Unfortunately, those still recovering from Sandy and in some Long Island communities, this storm will add to their troubles. We in Woodhaven will continue to try to assist them and keep them in our prayers.
As we approach March 10, it will be so good to have it “lighter later,” but until then, leave your porch lights on all night. Also, try to leave a light on in the back room of your home and if you do not have lights outside the perimeter of your property, please try to get them installed for your safety and security.
So, for now as we look forward to spring, as I have stated before, lets start our “spring” regimen early to look good and to feel good. Lift your spirits on our Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue at one of our excellent nail salons and get a manicure and a pedicure. Or have your hair done at one of our noted beauty salons, even get a tan! The nice added skin color from our local Woodhaven beauty salon twill make you feel like you just returned from a tropical vacation.
Looking “tanfastic,” go and take care of your business needs. Get your taxes prepared locally and then shop, shop, shop! For on our Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue there are so many bargains, every day and this President’s Day, Monday, February 18, will feature more sales than ever.
As in past years, our New York State senators, Honorable Kristen Gillibrand and Honorable Charles Schumer, support humane causes. My friend Jamie advises that we have to ban horse slaughter, the killing of healthy horses. Ask our Senators to co-sponsor and support S1176. Remember, teach your children to be kind to pet animals those inside and outside.

Last week I attended the School Sisters of Notre Dame Educational Center’s Mardi Gras Celebration. It was a lovely evening. These sisters teach and train young women so that they can find gainful employment. It was a good time for a very good cause.
Congratulations to Dana Cubillan, who was named to the Dean’s List for the fall 2012 semester at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn., and Andrea Pura, recipient of the Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence from Colgate University of Hamilton. You make Woodhaven proud.
Happy Valentine’s Day and have an enjoyable President’s Day. May God bless our leaders, may God bless our armed forces, may God bless our little Woodhaven, and most of all, may God bless our America.
