“We will welcome children to the water with games and songs, ensuring comfort and safety in the water as they learn new skills,” said Terry Hughes, director of the club. “It’s an excellent way for parents to help their children safely learn water skills and become more aware of their body movements in the water.” Children work with their instructors, parents and classmates in our Aquatic Center on improving their water-based motor skills, helping them to love swimming. This course will be a bonding experience that will fill instructors, parents and children with wonderful lifelong memories and ensure a lifetime of swimming success.
The Sea Turtles Program is for parents with children ages 6 months to 18 months. It teaches water orientation involving parent participation. It introduces them to the water and the joy of swimming. In addition, these lessons help parents learn how to keep their children safe in the water. The Sea Lions Program is for parents and their children who are between 18 months and 3-years old. “It is not really designed to teach children to become good swimmers or to survive in the water on their own,” said Melissa Castillo, aquatics director at the club, “this Parent and Child class gives parents safety information and teaches techniques to help orient their children to the water. It also provides direction regarding how to supervise water activities in a responsible manner.”
Social interaction at this age is key, as is repetition. The instructors introduce skills such as floating, submersion, freestyle and backstroke arm movements with songs and games that encourage confident and skilled young swimmers.
Astoria Assemblywoman Aravella Simotis said she is excited about the program. “I love the idea that we can take our children at an early age and have this great experience with them in the water. I love that it is available in Astoria and a beautiful new pool. I can’t wait,” she said during an event at the club last week.
The Club also offers private and group swim lessons. Senor swim is Wednesdays and Friday from 1PM till 2PM and costs $5. Family swim ($10 for the entire family) is on Saturdays from 1 till 3 and 4 till 6. They also offer a Red Cross Certified Lifeguarding course beginning May 4th.
