St. Stanislaus Kostka School at 61-17 Grand Avenue in Maspeth, celebrated its young achievers who completed a summer enrichment program that ran from June 25 to July 6. Children in grades K-2 were asked by their teachers to participate in the program based on high academic achievement.

This year's program was based on the Olympics, with multiple opportunities for children to learn about the Olympic Games and the countries competing in the games. Fourth-grade teacher Maria Marrocco volunteered to help children going into the first-grade with learning activities. “It's a great experience and a lot of fun,” Marrocco said at a ceremony at the school last Friday.

Her class made gold medals out of glitter and ribbon along with green head wreaths out of construction paper. They also made small replicas of the London Eye, a giant ferris wheel in London, England, where the 2012 Olympic Games will take place.

The final day of the program marked an opportunity for children to engage in sports activities similar to those in the Olympics. Third-grade teacher Catherine Mangone cheered on students as they threw frisbees, raced, and tossed water balloons.

Mangone worked with students going into the second grade. “Over the last two weeks, they've really learned a lot,” she said.
