Forest Hills was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy, particularly when it came to trees collapsing from strong winds.

For long-time locals Marc and Nina Werdesheim, a tree falling against their home was nothing new. Marc, who's lived at his home at 94-17 68th Ave. since 1972, said another tree on their property fell from a tornado back in the seventies, knocking out a window.

“The first thing we heard were the bricks go,” said Marc, who added that a burst of wind brought down the tree and pushed out some bricks from the building.

A concern for the future, Marc’s mother Nina said the shallow-rooted trees on their property were not fit for the landscape. “It's just dangerous,” she said.

Hundreds of trees have fallen throughout the city due to high winds from the storm. With so many residents calling 911 for help, they were soon advised to only call 311 in such cases.

With the old maple still pinned against their home, the Werdesheims said they weren't certain when it would be cleared away, but they felt lucky that there wasn't any further damage.
