Reopen Woodhaven

Dear Editor,

The ongoing debate between bringing Select Bus Service (SBS) to Woodhaven Boulevard, reintroduction of Long Island Rail Road service on the abandoned Rockaway line, or most recently exclusive busway-only on the old LIRR right-of-way missed another idea which could be quickly implemented benefiting thousands of residents.

Why not reopen the still intact underground Woodhaven LIRR Station that was closed in 1976? It would require a minimum amount of work to restore this station since it doesn't need to be built from scratch.

Neighborhood residents, along with those transferring from bus routes adjacent the reopened Woodhaven Station could access the Atlantic Avenue Terminal, and switching to the subway there provides access to employment opportunities, colleges, medical facilities, museums and the theater district, be it in downtown Brooklyn, the Financial District or Midtown Manhattan.

Reverse commuters wanting access to jobs and colleges in Long Island could transfer at the Jamaica LIRR Station.

Sincerely,

Larry Penner

Great Neck
