This May, as a part of the LIC Arts Open, Plaxall, a family run plastics company is asking local artists to step outside of their standard medium at the "Plastique Trois" exhibition.

Invented by Plaxall founder Louis Pfhol over 70 years ago, thermoforming is the process by which plastic sheets are heated until they are pliable enough to be formed into unique shapes. For this exhibition, Plaxall has asked local artists to try their own hand at Phol’s thermoforming technique.

Artists of varying artistic backgrounds were asked to create a new art piece using Pfohl's thermoforming method.

The goal of this exhibit is to prove that plastic, a generally commonplace product, can have a place at the forefront of modern art forums.

This year will mark the 3rd annual "Plastique" exhibition. Curated by artist William Garrett, "Plastique Trois" will run from May 15th to the 20th. The exhibition will be shown in the former Jeffrey Deitch Gallery at the Anable Basin Bar & Grill, on the East River at 4-40 44th Drive in Long Island City.

Returning to “Plastique Trois” this year are artists Lisa Diclerico, Kenny Greenberg, Jean-Marie Guyaux, Annalisa Ladicicco, William Garrett and John Long, who will take what they learned to work with thermoforming last year and mentor other local artists including Diane Hendry and Jack Rohe Howard-Potter.

“Plastic is so common in our lives that its use and value as a creative medium is often overlooked,” said Plaxall tenant Kenny Greenberg, whose work will be featured in Plastique Trois. “When artists from varied disciplines and styles take on the unfamiliar process of forming the otherwise familiar, the result is always a pleasing and surprising mix of ideas and forms.”

Pfohl founded Plaxall in the heart of Long Island City because it was the perfect location to culminate diverse business growth. Today, "Plastique Trois" pays homage to Long Island City, Pfohl, and his innovative methods at Plaxall.

An opening celebration will take place Friday, May 18 from 7 pm to 11 pm and feature a live concert appearance by the psychedelic western combo SUSS at 9 pm.

The show will be on view May 15-May 20, 2018, noon until 9:00 pm daily. The opening reception will be held Friday, May 18th at 7 pm.
