New bike path aimed to connect Park Slope, waterfront

With two new initiatives, Brooklyn bicyclists will not only be safer, but also have an easier time parking their two-wheelers.

A proposed bicycle path by the Department of Transportation down Sackett Street toward the existing Park Slope path and across the Gowanus Canal was presented at last wee's Community Board 6 Transportation Committee meeting.

The goal is to create a two-way bike path over the Union Street Bridge, which is currently only a Park Slope-bound route.

The proposed route would start at Grand Army Plaza and take riders down Lincoln Place, which turns into Degraw Street and ends up at Third Avenue. Cyclists would then turn southbound on Nevins Street towards the Union Street Bridge.

There would be no changes made to the traffic laws, and one-way vehicle traffic will continue over the bridge.

DOT is also looking to extend another bike lane. Currently a lane for cyclists exists on Union Street, but a new plan would create lanes for riders from Henry Street to Van Brunt Street.

The two plans would create a way for riders to get to the waterfront from Park Slope in a safer fashion.

“The main goal of this is to improve connectivity,” said DOT project manager Kimberly Rancourt.

Resident of Cobble Hill and bicycle activist Paco Abraham said the project was a good idea, and asked the DOT for an increase in signage once its complete.

DOT representative Ted Wright said there would be arrows painted on the ground showing cyclists where to turn.

However, Abraham said that those lines fade and,“you’re eye line is looking up, not down at the road.”

Meanwhile, Rose Water on Union Street between 5th and 6th avenues may be getting a new bike corral. At the moment, the space in front of the restaurant is not fit to park cars.

“This bike corral will be between a current loading zone and a fire zone, which is effectively unavailable to parking cars anyway,” said owner John Tucker, who admitted that as a car driver he understands the difficulties of finding a spot in the neighborhood, but that the corral wouldn't eliminate an existing spot.

Another corral is proposed for Columbia Street between Degraw and Kane streets. It would be located in front of Greenway Initiatives and take up one parking spot.

The committee voted unanimously in favor of all the projects, and they will be presented to the the full board at its next meeting.
