Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver, at 58 years old, will run in his first marathon this year. With the 26.2-mile run just weeks away, Silver is feeling good about this tremendous undertaking.
“My confidence is sky high,” he said.
Silver is 11 weeks into his training, steadily expanding his ability to run long distances. He said a recent 18-mile run “finally broke me,” but he quickly recovered and surpassed mile 20.
A big challenge in his preparation has been the weather, which has included many hot and humid days this summer, as well as rainy ones. But that has given the commissioner even more confidence to run in all types of weather.
“I’m hoping for weather in the upper 40s,” Silver said, “dry and no humidity.”
Silver also gave several tips to runners preparing for the marathon. Stick to your schedule. Be patient. Hydrate all week long. And most importantly, find people to run with.
“Make sure you share your experience,” he said. “The long run can go quicker with friends.”
He has several favorite routes to run, especially Prospect Park, which he knows “like the back of my hand.”
“It’s filled with so many memories,” he said. “It’s where I grew up.”
Silver also likes Central Park, Rockaway Beach, Riverside Park, Flushing Meadows-Corona Park and Astoria Park.
The commissioner has been sharing his journey on social media, hoping to inspire New Yorkers to embark on their own path. They don’t even have to run to be healthy, he said.
“Just take a walk in the park,” he said. “Get out, get healthy and enjoy some of our beautiful parks.”
