Glendale and Middle Village families gathered to enjoy food, shopping and children's rides at the annual Metropolitan Avenue Street Fair on Sunday.

Sponsored by the Kiwanis Clubs of Glendale and Middle Village, the fair raised funds for local and international causes.

From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., residents strolled from 73rd Place to 79th Street while snacking on typical street fair food and shopping with vendors selling clothing, jewelry, homemade crafts, housewares and more. Stops were made along the way to watch performances from Joe Fuoco's music group.

Children enjoyed the bouncy houses, slides, Sky Swing and other rides, which were free from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A portion of the fair's funds will go to Project Eliminate, a collaborated effort between Kiwanis International and UNICEF to save newborns and mothers suffering from tetanus.

The money will also go back into Glendale, Middle Village and other local communities, explained Tina DiTroia, President of the Kiwanis Club of Middle Village, which has co-sponsored the street fair for the last two years.

This includes Kamp Kiwanis for children, Superstorm Sandy relief for families, scholarships for students, book distribution and more.

"This is what we do as Kiwanians," said DiTroia, who was also looking for new recruits at the street festival.

While supporting the community, residents enjoyed the array of festivities.

"The fair has a variety of things to buy like clothing and accessories, and it's fun," said Adelisa Softic. "It's a friendly family environment."

Joanna Torres shared the same sentiments.

"Everybody is really nice, and you get to see the neighbors," she said. "What's great is that the children come and get to have fun."

Anyone interested in joining the Kiwanis can call (718) 894-2222 for the Middle Village club or (718) 628-0100 for the Glendale club for more information.
