Maspeth High School made it’s opening official on Monday at a ceremony with community members and elected officials, who were given a tour of the new building.

While the high school technically opened in September, the ceremony was a chance for elected officials and civic leaders to celebrate.

Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley praised Principal Khurshid Abdul-Mutakabbir for the job he has done integrating the school with the community.

“In just a few short months, he has shown that this school is one of the best schools in the city of New York,” she said. “You can see the level of commitment to the community from this school.”

Maspeth High School has already established “The Green Club,” an anti-graffiti programs that pairs students with local residents to beautify the neighborhood, and hosts local the local fire and police volleyball teams.

“This is a great morning for our students,” said Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott. “You will see education thriving because of great teachers, parents who are totally engaged in the lives of their children, but most importantly as a result of fantastic students.”

During the ceremony, Maspeth High School students showed off just some of the activities going on in the school. A scene was performed from Romeo and Juliet, a recent play that the school staged, and the school band performed with instruments they received just two months prior.

Finally, a Bollywood dance performance closed the event, showcasing the diversity of not only the programming, but the students themselves.

Mutakabir praised his teachers and said the dedicated staff often spends time on school-related projects in their personal time.

“I believe we are a school that is on the way to excellence,” he said. “We’re very fortunate to have such a wonderful place to have our students come everyday.”
