MTA planning shuttle buses for M train shutdown

Queens and Brooklyn residents are preparing for a shutdown of the M train scheduled to begin in July.

The first phase will suspend M train service for two months from the Metropolitan-Middle Village stop to Myrtle-Broadway. The second phase will begin at the same time, but is expected to last until April 2018.

During that time, the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) will offer three different shuttle bus options. The first will run from Fresh Pond Road to Myrtle-Broadway.

Another bus will run from the Metropolitan-Middle Village stop, make a stop at Fresh Pond Road and Metropolitan Avenue and continue down Forest Avenue.

The final bus will start at the Metropolitan-Middle Village stop and terminate at Flushing Avenue and Broadway via the L train stop at Jefferson Street.

During the entire length of the shutdown, the M train will be extended to Broadway Junction and the J and Z trains will be making all local stops to Marcy Avenue.

While work is being done the MTA will run shuttle train service from Metropolitan-Middle Village M to Myrtle-Wyckoff, where riders will be connected to the M train.

Completing work done on the M line is especially critical with the looming 15-month shutdown of the L train in April 2019.

“In Brooklyn and Queens, the L and the M sort of parallel each other and serve overlapping districts,” said New York City transit spokesperson Luke DePalma said. “It’s critical that we get the M to a state of good repair and deal with these issues so there are no hiccups or service-related problems.”

While DePalma said the agency is the shuttle buses will be able to handle the displaced riders during the M train shutdown.

“We’re going to be doing the best we can to meet the customer demand,” he said. “We’ll be making adjustments where we can.”

A major inconvenience, a calm before the storm, the buracratic, corruptive and deceptive MTA must rehabilitate the entire BMT Myrtle Avenue Line ASAP in anticipation for the increasing ridership when the L train shuts down to Manhattan in 2019.
