The event took in front of the Flavor of India restaurant at 260th Street and Hillside Avenue. The giveaway came just as indoor dining was set to resume in New York City at 25 percent starting capacity.
“We all want businesses to be open completely, but we have to be safe about it,” said Liu. “It should not be a political decision made by the governor or any elected officials. Even as much as people are screaming for indoor dining, we are still relying on the health department and professionals for what’s safe and what’s not.”
Councilman Barry Grodenchik also attended the event. He pointed out that businesses in the area have suffered.
“These merchants and restaurants here are losing business,” he said. “We have wonderful restaurants and they’re incredible but if you can’t operate it doesn’t help.”
