Lady Cougars take tourney title

The Martin Luther Lady Cougars (3-0/PSAA 1-0) used pressure defense and a run-and-gun offense to defeat St. Agnes 44-28 in the 12th Junior Varsity Invitational Basketball Tournament.

The Lady Cougars forced 19 turnovers in the contest, and had a total of 53 for the tournament.

The team was led by freshman point guard Leslly Marmolejo, who was named MVP of the tournament. In two games, she scored 24 points, had 10 assists and 12 rebounds, and added 14 steals.

Against St. Agnes, the Cougars jumped out to a 16-8 lead and never looked back. Martin Luther went on a 12-0 run early in the second quarter and guard Xena Andersen, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, scored 14 points (26 total points in the tournament).

In the the first round of tournament play Martin Luther defeated Columbia Prep 37-14, in which forward Dana Azzaro scored 15 points and had 7 steals.
