Baker's Dozen, located on 81-09 Lefferts Blvd. in Kew Gardens, has been operating for the past 18 years. Every morning at the break of dawn, the shop is filled with the aroma of fresh bagels and other baked goods. There are more than a dozen types of bagels and rolls, and even more varieties of spreads, along with a selection of Boar’s Head meats.
Jay Goodman, co-owner of the shop, says that the shop has been around for almost two decades. "I think Saint Patty’s made it eighteen years,” said Goodman.
On a regular weekday morning, lines of customers fill up the shop, sometimes reaching all the way to the entrance. On weekends, the shop gets even busier, with whole families coming in for a cozy breakfast.
Because of Baker's Dozen's long history in the neighborhood, the employees and customers share a special bound, like that of a family.
The owner greets many customers by name, and exchanges friendly conversations while they wait for their order.
Even though Baker's Dozen has a sister shop in Greenpoint, the bagels usually do not get distributed to other locations. When asked how many bagels are sold each day, Goodman said, “A lot.”
