Over the last three months, our region has had nearly 20 inches of rainfall. The soil is completely saturated, and that could spell trouble for many trees, especially those that are already in a weakened state due to other problems.
It would be very wise if Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver to order that certain heavily forested areas of our city parks and playgrounds be closed off to the public so that tree inspectors can inspect them.
Private tree companies that have been contracted out to the Forestry Divisions in each borough could certainly assist staff in undertaking this very large, but very necessary, endeavor.
The safety of the public is and always should be foremost when it comes to taking care of the trees in parks and playgrounds and on our streets.
