In it together?

Dear Editor,

Do TV broadcasts of looting, arson and violence followed by official pronouncements that “we are all in this together” cause some concern and anxiety? Am I the only person who is perplexed and resents the implied connection to the rioting mobs?

I can relate to anger and frustration, but fall short of understanding the desire to destroy property, loot and disrespect authority. I can empathize and relate to anger, but the desire to destroy, injure and steal comes from a different part of the soul.

Anger and frustration are not uncommon emotions and many people have experienced them. I and many acquaintances have shared occurrences without resorting to trashing property, inflicting injury or appropriating property.

The memory and significance of George Floyd’s tragic death has been defiled by the violence and looting. Am I now “in it together with” and expected to join hands and show compassion to persons who, because they are angry and frustrated and do not respect the law, will loot and destroy property in the name of “social justice”?

For those keeping a tally and abreast of racial attitudes and political correctness, I am a 79-year-old privileged white male who is now anxious about any anger and frustration issues my neighbors may have.
