The $5 million Gowanus Canal feasibility study begun by the Army Corps of Engineers in 2003 received its latest round of federal funding, Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez announced.
The House of Representatives included $134,000 in its fiscal year 2010 Energy and Water Development Appropriations conference report for the project, which is intended to assess the canal’s pollution and determine potential cleanup solutions.
The city and federal government are co-funding the study. To date, the federal government has pledged $2.25 million to the project.
After the Environmental Protection Agency proposed placing the canal on its National Priorities List of toxic sites in April, rumors circulated that the Army Corps would abandon its feasibility study.
Velazquez said the Corps is actually close to finishing the project.
“The Army Corps study is nearing completion, and its findings will play a critical role in developing our next steps for clean-up and habitat restoration at the Gowanus Canal,” Velázquez said in a statement announcing the funding.
“Working together, we can secure a healthy environment for the residents of Southwest Brooklyn to live, work and raise their families,” she added.
The Senate must approve the appropriations report before it can be signed into law by the president.
