Jerry Drake and the Front Page Big Band performed a number of classic and newly written big band pieces at the Oak Ridge House last week in Forest Park.

With nearly 40 years of performing experience, the group brought their act to Oak Ridge for an afternoon of fun and dance.

They played dozens of classics like “Moonlight Serenade,” “In The Mood” and “My Funny Valentine,” as well as some original material.

“They’re written like the way the big band would have written them if they had continued,” Drake said of his own pieces.

Drake and his band are currently made up of three trumpet players, four trombones, five saxophones and a rhythm section. They have recorded three albums with plans to continue producing new big band style tunes for their fans.

“If it’s merengue, and it’s mine versus one of the standards, if they can dance to it, they will,” Drake said. “The older people aren’t judgmental.”

Drake is currently focused on his new web-based talk show with QBO Media (www.qbomedia.tv) called Swing Street, expected to air in the coming months. He said to expect interviews with Cristina Fontanelli, Julie Budd and radio and television personality Joe Franklin.

“It takes a lot of work to book all these things that I’m doing,” he said. “I might be getting old, but I still have a lot to do.”
