The latest move is to make Diwali a school holiday according to an article in the October 24ht edition of this paper. Councilman Daniel Dromm states that the holiday symbolizes an inner light to dispel ignorance and darkness. As a parent of two children that graduated college and a retired teacher, I say if you want to dispel ignorance and darkness then stay in school.
Before you realize it, every politician representing a nationality in their district will try to get another day recognized and before you know it you will dwindle down the 183 school days a year to zero.
Is this going to help our children when the graduation rate is down in high schools to 50 percent? What is the answer? Don’t take away anymore school days!
