Empire wraps up first season of team tennis

The New York Empire concluded it’s inaugural season as part of the Mylan World Team Tennis professional league.

And while the results on the court show – the Empire finished with a 2-10 overall record, good for last place in the six-team league – the season was a success in a number of other areas.

For starters, it marked the return of professional tennis to Forest Hills, with several of the sports biggest names taking to the West Side Tennis Club courts, the former home of the U.S. Open. Andy Roddick joined the Empire for a match on August 9, while Caroline Wozniacki visited Forest Hills as part of the Philadelphia Freedoms team on August 1.

And in the first match of the year on July 31, Martina Hingis played in Queens as a meber of the Washington Kastles.

The league’s championship match will also be played in Forest Hills on August 26 at 4 p.m. The matchup features the San Diego Aviators (8-4), which includes James Blake, and the Orange County Breakers (8-4).
