Faculty members earn an average of $2,700 per course as adjunct professors, a position that didn't exist when I attended Queens College. All my professors were full-time instructors. Adjunct really means underpaid.
CUNY spends more on administration than education. Chancellor James Milliken gets over $500,000 a year plus $18,000 monthly for a luxury apartment, car and driver. The presidents of CUNY's four-year colleges get up to $350,000 a year, while students struggle to pay their $6,600 annual tuition.
But at least these administrators are working. CUNY's Chancellor Emeritus Matthew Goldstein gets $300,000 a year as a retiree. Not bad for a no-show job.
CUNY was tuition-free when I went there. Time magazine called it "The Slum Kids' Harvard." Now it's the penthouse executives' heaven.
