Jaytornah Wisseh

Guard, LIU Men’s Basketball

It’s been a while since the Long Island University men’s basketball team has been a squad of some prominence in the Northeast Conference.

LIU is only 208-261 for a .443 wining percentage all-time the league, and the Blackbirds haven’t won an NEC title since the 1997-98 season.

However, this year, LIU finds itself in second place in the NEC with a 4-2 record (8-8 overall) after starting 4-1 in the conference, its best start since beginning 5-0 in the 1996-97 campaign.

A huge key to this season’s success has been the play of the man who runs the Blackbirds’ offense, 6-1 junior point guard, Brooklyn’s Jaytornah Wisseh, who earned the NEC Player Of The Week Award on January 12th.

Wisseh, a pre-season all-NEC pick, averaged 19.0 points, 7.0 assists, and 4.7 rebounds in guiding LIU to a perfect 3-0 record with a pair of conference wins sandwiched around a victory over future NEC member Bryant last week.

In a 74-67 home win over Sacred Heart (6-11, 3-4 NEC) on January 5th, Wisseh scored a team-high 17 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, and handed out 5 assists. Despite shooting just 4 of 12 from the field, Wisseh remained focused at the free throw line, where he made 9 of 10 foul shots.

Two nights later, Wisseh, again struggling from the floor (going 2-for-7), found other ways to fill out the boxscore, with 7 assists (while committing just 3 turnovers), 3 rebounds, and making 10 of 12 free throws, to finish with 15 points, as LIU beat Bryant at home, 76-61.

By the same score, on January 10th, LIU won at Wagner (10-7, 3-4 NEC, and no relation to myself - haha), as Wisseh played about as well as a point guard can. He tied a season high with 25 points on sizzling 9-for-12 shooting from the floor, including 5 of 6 from three-point range. Great marksmanship for sure, but equally impressive was that Wisseh also added 5 rebounds and had a remarkably prefect turnover ratio, dishing out 9 assists while committing no turnovers.

Congratulations to this week’s Athlete Of The Week, Jaytornah Wisseh, who has Brooklyn’s Blackbirds flying high in the NEC!
