As the first medical marijuana dispensary opened in Queens this past weekend, Ari Hoffnung, CEO of Vireo Health of New York has a message: they are not selling joints or pot brownies.

The Minnesota-based company’s new facility is located in Elmhurst, down the street from Queens Center Mall. It offers medicinal cannabis – in the form of capsules, oils and vapes – to those who have a registered medical marijuana card.

Hoffnung, a former Queens resident and alumnae of Queens College, worked previously as the CEO of Fiorello Pharmaceuticals, another medical marijuana company. Before that, he was New York City’s deputy comptroller for Budget and Public Affairs.

In his new role as CEO of Vireo Health of New York, Hoffnung wants people to know that his company is strictly professional in nature. Hoffnung also intentionally created a workplace that is medically focused.

“We are operating a dispensary that very much has the feel of a high-end doctor’s office or pharmacy,” he said. “We want to make sure that the atmosphere is comfortable and welcoming for patients.”

As his company begins to attract new medical marijuana patients throughout Queens, Hoffnung proudly boasted his Queens roots.

“We’re honored to be in the borough of Queens. It marks the first time in nearly 100 years that medical cannabis is sold legally in the borough,” he said.
