Queens College student Andrea Slavin has been named an Up2Us Coach Across America for summer 2012. And it is an opportunity that the sports lover is taking in with pride.

Up2Us, a national nonprofit coalition leading the movement to advance youth sports, recently announced that the Floral Park resident will serve in the position at America Scores NY.

Slavin, a senior soccer player, will be joining the Up2Us Coach Across America program through efforts by East Coast Conference Commissioner Dr. Robert Dranoff, who secured National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) funding to provide career development for one student-athlete in the conference.

“I’m passionate about sports, because it’s been a constant variable in my life that has given me great self-confidence,” said Slavin. “As a child, and even now, sports were a way for me to feel as if I had a purpose and gave me importance.”

The Up2Us Coach Across America program is a nationwide initiative supporting a workforce of coaches who focus on positive youth development through sports. Currently, Up2Us places 260 coaches, the only program of its kind to provide AmeriCorps coaches in over 100 disadvantaged communities across the country.

Slavin will be working with young people through America SCORES New York, a nonprofit organization based in Manhattan that strives to empower students in urban communities using soccer, writing, creative expression, and service-learning, inspiring them to lead healthy lifestyles. She said that she is looking forward to the experience.

“I am so passionate simply because I am my happiest when I am active and playing sports,” Slavin said. “Plain and simple, sports make me smile, and I believe every child deserves the chance to smile.”
