The 2016 U.S. Open is headed down the home stretch.

The men's field has been whittled down to eight players at the quarterfinals got underway on Tuesday with a matchup between French countrymen Gael Monfils and Lucas Pouille, the 24 seed who sent Rafael Nadal home early.

Other notable names to make it to the field of eight include top seed and reigning Open champion Novak Djokovic and second-seeded Andy Murray of Great Britain. Rounding out the remaining men are Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, Juan Martin del Potro, Stan Wawrinka and overall six-seed Kei Nishikori of Japan.

On the women's side, it's no surprise that Serena Williams is still in the running, looking to revenge her disappointing loss in the semifinals last year. Second-seed Angelique Kerber is also in the final eight.

Three un-seeded players made it to the quarterfinals, including Ana Jonjuh of Croatia, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, and Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova.

Rounding out the field are Simona Halep, Karoline Pliskova, and overall seven-seed Roberta Vinci of Italy, who was beat Williams in last year.

Sixth-seed Venus Williams was set packing by Pliskova, losing a third-set tiebreaker on Monday.
