The cost of the proposed Woodhaven Boulevard Select Bus Service (SBS) project just doubled by 100 percent from $200 million to $400 million. And the completion date has been pushed back from 2019 to 2025.
The proposed Brooklyn-Queens Waterfront Streetcar project cost recently grew from $1.7 billion to $2.5 billion by City Hall's estimate. The $2.5 billion does not include several hundred million more for construction of two bridges over the Gowanus Canal and Newtown Creek.
Both projects are still in the development stage, and years away from actual construction contracts. Cost estimates will continue to grow as design, engineering and scope progresses.
And during actual construction, costs will inevitably increase. At the end of the day, Woodhaven SBS could cost several hundred million more, and Brooklyn-Queens Connector several billion more.
Are these wise and prudent investments of limited transit dollars?
