Maspeth United Methodist Church has property but no church. The historic St. Saviour’s Church is lying in storage, ready to be rebuilt, but as of now there is no place to rebuild it.

Why not kill two birds with one stone and rebuild St. Saviour’s on the Maspeth United Methodist Church property?

In that scenario, everyone wins - so why has nobody suggest this yet?

The fire that destroyed Maspeth United received plenty of attention from community members in the days and weeks after the event. Since then, interest has fallen off, despite calls by the church’s pastor for a fundraising drive to replace the property.

The St. Saviour site is hotly contested.

At a recent Community Board 5 budget meeting, where residents suggested worthy capital project investments in their neighborhoods, the St. Saviour’s site emerged as the most talked-about item.

Many want the approximately two-acre site, where the church once stood, to be turned into a park. Elected officials agree Maspeth needs more park space.

Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley has said she is working on the issue; Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe, too, has focused on the lack of public space in Maspeth.

But right now there does not appear to be enough money to turn the space into a park. Benepe has said the city is not interested in using its condemnation powers to acquire the parcel.

So that leaves the site vacant for the foreseeable future. While residents in Maspeth wait for money to become available for the project, why not put the dissembled church to good use? We hear there’s a vacant property in Maspeth that could use a new house of worship.
