An eagle tops the U.S. Federal Reserve building's facade in WashingtonThe U.S. economy and job market continue to strengthen, the Federal Reserve said on Wednesday, leaving the door open for a possible interest rate hike when central bank policymakers next meet in September. "On balance, a range of labor market indicators suggest that underutilization of labor resources has diminished since early this year," the Fed said in a policy statement that kept rates unchanged. The statement may strengthen expectations of a rate hike at the Fed's September meeting.

There are no clear photographs in existence of the tall, one-eyed leader of Afghanistan's Taliban insurgents, and only a handful of foreigners have seen him. The Afghan government said on Wednesday it had enough "credible information" to confirm that Omar had died in April, 2013, in neighboring Pakistan.

GSK confirmed it was looking into the latest claims of improper payments set out in a whistleblower's email sent to its top management on Monday. The latest allegations say GSK paid Romanian doctors hundreds, and in one cases thousands, of euros between 2009 and 2012 for prescribing its medicines, including prostate treatments Avodart and Duodart and Parkinson's disease drug Requip.
