Heavy casualties were feared on Tuesday after a suicide attack at a busy cattle market in the northeastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri, civilian vigilantes battling Boko Haram told AFP. The blast in the Borno state capital happened at about 1:00 pm (1200 GMT) as traders ended business for the day, Shettima Bulama said in an account backed up by another local vigilante. The attack came after Boko Haram militants again pounded Maiduguri with rocket-propelled grenades in the early hours of Tuesday, after hitting the city in a similar attack on Saturday.
United Airlines aircraft were held on the ground across the United States for nearly 40 minutes early Tuesday for unexplained technical issues, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA gave the reason for the rare complete ground stop, which affected hundreds of flights, as "automation issues." The stop began at 1254 GMT and was lifted at 1333 GMT.
