Program notes for Zing: Zing was the result of something called the 'Bar Music Project', where I was interested in writing a style of music suitable for both classical music concert halls and informal bars and coffee shops. As the piece developed it moved closer to a work for concert halls than coffee shops, but that initial inspiration is still part of its expression. The work features the violin (and includes a virtuosic cadenza for the solo violin towards the end) supported by cello, piano and vibraphone. This orchestration allowed intriguing possibilities to either have instruments work as pairs (violin paired with cello against the vibraphone paired piano), work as a cohesive unit, or work completely independently from each other.
